Project Proposals and Ideas

1) Emergency Event Propagation

Prevention of catastrophes demands early detection and a reliable propagation of events in order to assess the situation. In rural environments where a wired communication is not feasible and oftentimes too expensive, a wireless multi-hop network technology is preferred. Examples include

  • fire/gas leak detection on offshore oil rigs,
  • intrusion/motion detection in rural areas,
  • pH, temp., chemicals measurements for underwater pollution control.

In this matter, the goal of this project proposal is to design and implement a reliable event propagation system using constrained devices in low-power wireless multi-hop networks.

2) Wearables

Today's battery-operated low-power constrained devices provide ample processing power and are sufficiently small to assist the everyday life in form of wearables. Examples include

  • health monitoring,
  • data synchronization / communication with other devices,
  • sensory augmentation via haptic wearables.

In this project proposal, a wearable system should be designed and implemented that assists the wearer in certain scenarios and that wirelessly communicates with a gateway device or with other wearables to trigger and coordinate external events.

3) Smart Traffic Assistant for Bikers

In contrast to car drivers, cyclists are physically more involved in traffic and have less space on their vehicle for assisting gadgets. This project aims to assist the cyclist by sensing the environment, the bicycle, or the cyclist and to notify the cyclist by means that do not require vision and hands. Examples include

  • fitness / health monitoring,
  • sensory augmentation (what's behind?),
  • location(GPS)- and time(GPS,DCF77)-based event triggers.
