Abstract: We present the first timing measurement study of the Resource Public Key Infrastructure (RPKI) based on in-the-wild prefixes rather than researcher-controlled RPKI beacons. We shed light on a core question regarding RPKI and Route Origin Validation (ROV) deployments: How fast does the data plane converge when RPKI security attestations change? Our preliminary results reveal that RPKI propagation is at least one order of magnitude slower than plain BGP. Across the 24,886 observed transitions caused by ROA changes, transitions from an invalid to a non-invalid state affect 50% of our vantage points within 9–12 minutes, while transitions into the invalid state take 27–42 minutes. Prefixes in multi-homed networks are, on average, quicker to reach and take longer to be unreachable.
